Fabric Printing Technical Information
We print directly onto rolls of beautiful cotton, linen and other natural fabrics using our 1.9 metre wide digital printers. Unlike screen-printing, our digital print technology can deliver nearly unlimited colours and gradients on your choice of fabric.
The most common types of ink we use on natural fabrics are water-based reactive and pigment inks that result in brilliant colour brightness. Our printers are configured for an eight-colour process instead of the typical four. This allows for a colour gamut that traditional fabric printers cannot match.
The majority of our cotton and linen fabrics are woven including canvas, drill, plain, muslin, panama, denim, poplin, flannelette and sateen. We also print on beautiful silk fabrics. Natural fabrics are suitable for fashion garments, tablecloths, bedding, baby clothes and various other projects. All of our cotton, linen and silk fabrics have a lovely hand feel and drape.
For optimum print brightness and wash fastness, all the natural fabrics we supply are specially pre-treated and go through our steam or dry heat ink fixation units after printing.
Although not essential, we recommend using pre-treated fabrics for use in apparel. As a rule of thumb, pre-treated fabric increases the colour intensity and between 10 and 20 percent
We also print polyester fabrics digitally onto rolls.
The difference in this technique is that we use a sublimation process with heat-sensitive inks. Our water-based inks turn into gas under the pressure of heat and soak into the fabric. The inks become part of the structure of the fabric, therefore images do not fade or crack, even after multiple washings.
Due to lower cost and simpler printing technique, polyester is now woven and knitted with cotton and other fibre to produce fabrics which are very close in appearance to natural ones. These great blends now replicate the textural characteristics of canvas, linen, velvet, cotton, jersey, satin, crepe and georgette very well.
Polyester has the added advantages of being shrink-proof and having a longer life, making it perfect for soft furnishings, swimwear and sportswear etc.
